five by five

The Tulsa Artist Coalition has a fundraiser every year called 5 X 5. It is called such because TAC gives you a 5 inch by 5 inch canvas to do with what you will and then donate back to them. A gallery opening is held on May 5 at 5:55pm and each work is priced at 55 dollars. Yes, redundant, but still a great idea to raise money and allow local artists a chance to display their work.

First I, NEVER work this small so it is a challenge to change scale in such a drastic change. I really enjoy being able to try out new things and not worry about messing up a huge piece of cloth that I then have to rip out. If I don't like where the piece is going I just start over, which I ended up doing this year.

I started out by using my pile of thread scraps that I had saved up. Honestly, I thought the piece turned out cool, except that the texture all the thread made after I had sewn it down reminded me of, well, pubic hair. Now, I don't know about you but I'm not crazy about pubes being the first thought of something I've created. I'm sure many people wouldn't mind, but I do.

Take 2

Boyfriend even did one. Very nice, boyfriend!

Here is my 5 x 5 from last year.

Here is my 5 x 5 from 3 years ago, when I still fancied myself a painter.

  1. I love the 5 x 5 idea! That is a really great fundraiser. You and boyfriend did a great job...and no you do not want people to think of pubes! Hee Hee

  2. I loved this little peak into your creative process. Would love to write about 5X5 at Tasha Does Tulsa - who can I bother about it?

  3. That picture makes mine look 3-8 times cooler/better than it really is. Thank you for your help with it. I love urs!
