five by five

The Tulsa Artist Coalition has a fundraiser every year called 5 X 5. It is called such because TAC gives you a 5 inch by 5 inch canvas to do with what you will and then donate back to them. A gallery opening is held on May 5 at 5:55pm and each work is priced at 55 dollars. Yes, redundant, but still a great idea to raise money and allow local artists a chance to display their work.

First I, NEVER work this small so it is a challenge to change scale in such a drastic change. I really enjoy being able to try out new things and not worry about messing up a huge piece of cloth that I then have to rip out. If I don't like where the piece is going I just start over, which I ended up doing this year.

I started out by using my pile of thread scraps that I had saved up. Honestly, I thought the piece turned out cool, except that the texture all the thread made after I had sewn it down reminded me of, well, pubic hair. Now, I don't know about you but I'm not crazy about pubes being the first thought of something I've created. I'm sure many people wouldn't mind, but I do.

Take 2

Boyfriend even did one. Very nice, boyfriend!

Here is my 5 x 5 from last year.

Here is my 5 x 5 from 3 years ago, when I still fancied myself a painter.

Spray Glue is Your Friend

Here's a fun fact about me....I like to have at least 5-9 projects going on at once, which is why my work room looks like this. I am by no means a clean freak but I get to break-down stage when my room gets like this. Oh, and by the way this picture was taken half way through the clean up process. It was worse!

Got everything back in place. Sometimes I just need to put everything back in its place so that I can find what I need. You can make magical things happen when you have a tidy and well organized work space.

Onto my projects for the week.

1. Headbands

All my fav Starbucks baristas are sportin' my headbands and sending more customers to Dwelling Spaces, so I've got to restock. Thanks ladies of Starbucks!

2. Cuffs

3. Journals

Mary Beth has been asking me to make some journals, so I finally got with it. If you like writing and you like Felix & Jayne head on down to Dwelling Spaces, I've got just the thing for you.

4. Price Signs

This is where the spray glue comes in kind of handy.

5. Art Pieces

starbucks and such

Tonight in Starbucks, the barista asked me where I got my headband. So, I was like "I made it." Then she was like, "oh you're Felix & Jayne? I just bought one of your headbands at Dwelling Spaces." Yeah, so that was awesome.

I made four new clutch patterns today. I usually hate making patterns because they never turn out right. The stars must have been in alignment though, because all my patterns turned out really well. Just have to figure out which one I like best now.

Also, got an art piece almost done. I have to go get canvas stretching pliers tomorrow. I tried with regular pliers but couldn't get it tight enough. Re-do.

I'm so excited because we are getting ready to turn on Lost. Boyfriend made me start watching it and now I'm hooked. On another note Netflix may be the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Enjoy this photo.

well hello there

Today I couldn't settle on one project so I had quite a few things going on at once. I good at that. I started making an art piece.

I actually went ahead and cut all the fabric for all my frames that I made yesterday. I'm so excited to see how they all turn out.

For Christmas I got a big box of discontinued fabric swatches from an upholstery store. I know not everyone would appreciate a gift like this, but its right up my alley. So, of course I started making more cuffs today.

Then just to mix it up a bit I wrapped presents for Isaac's birthday tomorrow. I'm so excited to give him his gifts!

Oh and my rings came today, so so many things to keep me busy.

Okay well that's all, gotta finish cleaning. One of Isaac's friends from Peace Corps is coming to stay with us and I don't want him to think we are complete slobs, kind-of slobs is okay though.

chicks with saws

I spend a lot of time sewing bags and accessories and have of late been missing making art pieces. My degree is in fine art, but since I've been out of school and started my business I haven't had the time. I decided last month that as soon as the Christmas rush was over I was gonna make some art. Today I spent the day making stretcher bars.

Pulled out the ole miter saw and got to work. I love love love having this saw but it stills scares the crap out of me.

Remember, safety first!

Ta-Da! 8 frames done. All I have to say is that I'm too old to be sitting on a concrete floor all day long.
